iPhone Improvements Wish List for Xmas

As I have already mentioned of the past, Apple is currently working on the software update version 2.2 for the iPhone. The beta version is currently being tested by developers and its release date is still unknown. I’m sure Apple has already worked in all the improvements and features that they’re going to for this update.

So what comes after 2.2? 2.3! And with Christmas right around the corner, what better gift could Apple give us iPhone owners than a 2.3 version software update. Although unlikely to happen due to the short period of time Apple would have to work on it and the unknown release date of 2.2 (Apple could be planning to release this near Christmas.. Who knows), this is a list of things I would love to see under my Apple tree on Christmas day…
- Copy and Paste - Seriously. This has been a feature that iPhone users have longed for, a feature that would add numerous levels of usability to texting, surfing, etc, and a feature that Apple just seems to keep neglecting.
- A fix for Safari so that it doesn’t crash - Now, I know that it is impossible to prevent any application from crashing, but Safari shouldn’t crash with only one web page open. Maybe the iPhone hardware is the culprit for this and maybe I overestimated the multi-tasking capabilities of this phone. However, I think Apple should give Safari a serious look and see if anything can be done to optimize its mobile web browsing experience and bring crashes down to a near-zero minimum.
- The ability to change the overall theme of the phone - Jailbroken iPhone users have this feature. Why can’t us loyal customers have it, too? It’s not that I hate the current theme. In fact, it’s sleek, sexy, and simple. But it would be nice to change it up every once in a while. Maybe a function that allows us to change colors up a bit or add a wallpaper to the springboard (the classic iPhone view that you see in every screenshot featuring the black background with all the icons on it). If this is even too much then maybe Apple could add other predesigned themes on the phone, leaving the current as default, and allow us to switch between those. Then they could create more and put them in the AppStore and allow us to install them directly from there. Wishful thinking…
- Multimedia Messaging (MMS) - It disturbs me so much when I get a text message from a friend that says “View this multimedia message blah blah blah at http://www.viewmymessage.com.” Why wasn’t MMS, a feature that is pretty much standard on most cell phones today, not included in the first release of the iPhone to begin with? Maybe it has something to do with how texts are sent and received on the iPhone, or maybe it’s just Apple not wanting to integrate an important AT&T feature into their OS. I know this feature will never be implemented into the phone (Apple has already said numerous times that they weren’t going to), but it never hurts to ask Santa for something you really want!
- Text Messaging in Landscape Mode - We can use the keyboard in landscape mode in Safari. Why not when texting? For me, it would make things easier because I have pretty big fingers. This one shouldn’t be hard at all to implement, since the ability is already there in the phone. Ho ho ho!
- Flash in Safari - The ability to view flash content in Safari would be nice. However, this would likely cause more crashses than my rising blood pressure needs. Fix the crashes, then add the flash.
- The ability to delete/hide unwanted default icons - When you first ever start up a new iPhone, you will see numerous icons, most of which you want to keep. However there are 3 that I have no use for and would love to be gone off my already cluttered springboard. Those 3 are the Weather icon, Stocks icon, and iTunes icon. iTunes you say? Yes. I’m not in a 3G network and I rarely get on Wi-Fi (only while in class), so the iTunes icon is useless to me. Again, this feature should be easy to implement.
- How about some Video Recording? - The iPhone has good video playback, but no way to record video. Ironic huh? Oh what a wonderful Christmas day it would be if I could video record my family fighting at the dinner table! (joking of course).
- The ability to cancel the sending of a text message - Once again, this is a feature that is pretty standard on most cell phones nowadays. Little things like this that were left out make me think twice about my decision on buying this phone. Bah humbug!
- Folders on the springboard - Last but not least, folders on the springboard (sounds kind of like the name of a song or album doesn’t it?). I’m surprised this hasn’t already been done. Most smartphones on the market have this, but not the iPhone. It’s just no fun having to scroll through multiple springboards to get to the app that I want. Also, the icons are just unorganized. I want to be able to put all my blog apps (WordPress, Twitterific, etc..) into one folder so that I can easily access them, and all my music apps (iPod, Pandora, etc…) into another. Please Santa, please!
Well there you have it. Christmas Day would be a lot merrier if I woke up in the morning, plugged my iPhone into my computer, opened iTunes, and saw a software update available with most of these features included.
