A new story popped up yesterday about an exploding iPhone 3G in a the French newspaper La Provence.  Allegedly the young man was making a call on his girlfriend’s  iPhone when it exploded in his face sending pieces of the screen’s glass in his face and even in one of his eyes.

The mother of the boy contacting the Apple Consumer Service by phone was told that this was impossible to have happened and that the problem was most likely due to an overheating battery. The victim later decided to file suit. After a few similar stories it’s hard to tell if the story is fabricated or true. It does seem a bit weird that the iphone didn’t seem to have melt prior to the explosion.
