Free Google GPS navigation iPhone App with turn-by-turn navigation in the works

Google announced it would release a free, GPS navigation app with turn-by-turn navigation for Android with the promise that they have an iPhone version in the works!

So what happened to Garmin and TomTom today?

  • Garmin dropped 14%, TomTom 36%.
  • Google went up nearly 10%!

All of this on the heels of TomTom releasing their $200+ GPS navigation system for the iPhone.  Oops much?

Google just cut the traditional GPS navigation companies at the knees by releasing what may be a far superior product for free. It is not a standalone navigation app. Rather it taps into a lot of the resources Google makes available on the Web, including Google Maps, Streetview, voice recognition, and sophisticated search.

Google Maps Navigation Beta Video:

And Google is happy to give its navigation app away for free because it leverages many existing technologies it has already built for the Web, and it encourages more people to use Web-capable phones and do local searches on them. It’s strategy is to give the software away for free, and make money on the search ads.

It’s all about getting what you need and having the options to do so. I have a plan with 500MB data a month and frankly never been over (or close to) that ever.

re: This is far to be true for everyone. Just in Europe about 40% of iPhone purchased are legally Factory-Unlocked and sold without any form of contract.

Buying a smartphone and not getting an unlimited data plan is just plain stupid. Just buy a cheap phone if you don’t fully use a smartphones features. Smartphones have the disadvantage of being larger, more expensive, eat batteries etc. I can live with these limitations because of all the cool features of a smartphone and constant access to online data. The phone would make no sense to me without an unlimited plan.

Quick start on this product gets you going immediately and on the road. Other features on this model are fantastic as you work thru the easy learning programs and instructions.

I don’t know why you guys are knocking AT&T and google. On AT&T, you’re required to have a data plan on any smartphone or iPhone you purchase. So data charges shouldn’t even be a problem. There is no iPhone or smartphone on a prepaid card. From my belief, you need a data plan with the Android as well. So what everyone is saying about data charges, learn more about your own plans and cell phones first.

they dont care aobut jail break iphones. If you are with at&t you have to buy the data plan for iphone therefore you dont need to worry about data charges.

as stated in the video , this wll not work without data connection like wifi or 3G. I rathe ruse tom and garmin than use google as i need to pay for data charges and this sh&t cannot be used with prepaid cards..

for prepaid card users traditional gps apps that come wtih yr phone are the best..

this app will not work without wi-fi or 3G since it downloads photos, this works just like google earth on yr pc laptop,
i dont think google can win over tom tom or garmin…unless one factor – the data charges in the future become dirt cheap with carrier plans.

They could like with the 1st iPhone use Cell phone triangulation as an alternative. I used it quite a bit with Navizon back in the day.. It collects data and traces the approximate location of the cell phone via towers can be existing cell-phone towers, water tanks, tall buildings, or other locations where receiving antennas can be mounted.

Would this work without 3g and/or wifi? Are there any that do?

I cant wait for the app. It’s just what I’ve been missing. Hopefully it will come out on the iPhone soon!

I can see TomTom or Garmin teaming up with Microsoft as a result.
