iPhone OS 3.1 to Fix Battery Issues

It’s easy to blame the new hardware for the quick battery sucking of the new iPhone 3G S but, apparently, the new design and all its bells and whistles aren’t the culprit. Instead, it’s the software, Apple iPhone OS 3.0, that’s drawing the juice from iPhone 3G S batteries faster than before.

According to The Examiner, battery issues started cropping up before the Apple iPhone 3G S was even released, which means it was iPhone OS 3.0 software that was bleeding batteries dry, prompting users to complain that their iPhone batteries wouldn’t even hold a charge for a full day. Ultimately, it led to speculation that the battery issues were a software problem, not a hardware problem.

“This speculation is effectively confirmed when looking at the battery for the new iPhone 3G S, which is virtually identical to the iPhone 3G’s battery,” wrote Daniel Nations, The Examiner’s “iPhone Examiner.”

It is probable that the push notification is gobbling up battery life. Like with BlackBerry smartphones, push notifications in the iPhone OS 3.0 software let messages be pushed from a server to the iPhone. To do so, the device must maintain an open connection that lets the smartphone and server communicate, a true power drain. The battery will last a little longer if the push notification is turned off.

There are other theories on the short battery life as well, including the use of GPS and other features and functions in the Apple iPhone 3G S.

Regardless, Apple has done little to help users cope with weak battery life. The iPhone’s battery is sealed inside, meaning users can’t swap it out with a fresh one while their battery is recharging.

Apple is expected to fix the battery issues with the release of iPhone OS 3.1, which is now in beta.

I took my 3gs into the apple store, and was able to talk to a manager. he assured me that the issue was with the way the software handled the new cellular receiver.its pulling way to much juice, so they told me to not worry, 3.1 would fix the problem. So I guess all I can do is hope that he was right, and that I will be able to make a call without draining half my battery.

As much as I was happy to see the arrival of Phone OS 3.0 and all it’s wonderful features I think it’s just weary down the battery down too much. Hope they can find a solution quickly to the problem.

I have both the 3G and the 3G S. Both of the are running the 3.0 software and the battery on both of them drains real quick and I’m not usings push notifications (they are turned off) and I even shut off push in mail, wifi and 3G but that didn’t help. While I could charge the iPhone before I went to sleep with 2.2.1 and then put it next to my bed and still having almost 100% battery life in the morning with 3.0 it’s not anywhere close to that. When I’m lucky the next morning I have like 70 percent left (all the battery intensive stuff is turned off), sometimes only 50% on both phones
