Last week, iPhone application developers were given the latest Beta version of the iPhone 3.1 update. Not to be confused with Friday’s 3.01 release, which was merely a security patch to prevent your device from taking over the world.

Here were some of improvements of iPhone OS 3.1:
- Like copy/paste for images in iPhone 3.0, you can now copy\paste videos into email on iPhone 3GS. Previously you could only use the share option which would compress the video to a lower resolution. Pick a video , tap and hold for “copy”, switch to email, tap and hold for paste video on iPhone 3GS. The size of the email boxes for the sender and receiver will still likely be a limiting factor. (It appears to be up to 15mb)
- The addition of a screen that shows your tethering data statistics.
- Enabling app developers more access to the camera, which will lead to a possible deluge of Augmented Reality apps.
- Password-locked phones will now ask for a PIN, the first time the device is plugged into a new computer for syncing.
- Live HTTP streaming has failover support that allows the content provider to make available multiple playlists in a queue, so that if one fails to load properly you can easily switch over to another.
How copy/paste Video will work under iPhone 3.1:
iTunes already had this feature, but the protective measure now works in more apps, including PhoneView.
- Bluetooth audio recording now supports third party applications. Nice little addition for those who like to make audio notes with apps other than Apple’s own Voice Memos app.
- That also means podcasting just got even easier. Use the Audioboo app to record shows up to 5 minutes long via bluetooth. The app uploads your show when finished. I’ve tried it out recently on some mini episodes of my own podcast, and it worked very nicely.
Finally, something call “Failover Support”, which, According to CNET now allows the content provider to make available multiple playlists in a queue, so that if one fails to load properly you can easily switch over to another.
