Photos and even a video got published by Covino & Rich blog (via MacRumors) that are allegedly show the new iPod touch 3G (Third Generation) aka iPod touch 2009. The  photos show a device that looks like today’s iPod touch but with a camera in the back.

By now it is almost certain that the iPod touch will a have a camera. It is just straight forward, since the new iPhone 3.0 software sports video capabilities.
The new photos and video of the iPod touch 3G are most likely though not showing the final device Apple is rumored to unveil at a rumored music related press-event in early September. The touch shown is a prototype and could be already very old as well.

In any case a camera is important on the new iPod touch to leverage the wealth of upcoming Augmented Reality (AR) applications. We have seen already several apps for the iPhone that are going to be fully released with the iPhone 3.1 update.
In my opinion Augmented Reality apps will be huge on portable devices. A trend that Microsoft again missed by not integrating a camera in the new upcoming Zune HD.

I am really excited to see if Apple will finally adopt OLED screens with the new iPod touch 3G. Microsoft is ahead on this front as the Zune HD sports a shiny 3.3 inch OLED screen.
