The iPhone 3GS, released in June, included up to 32 GB of Toshiba NAND flash memory. The memory maker announced Tuesday that it created a new 64GB chip.

Toshiba’s new 64GB embedded NAND flash memory module is being termed as the ones with the highest capacity ever tasted by the industry. The Japanese giant has, in fact, brought together a dedicated controller and as many as sixteen 32Gbit chips manufactured using its own 32nm technology. It has also thinned down the module by way of chip thinning and layering methods. The final product boasts of a thickness of just 30 micrometers. With shipping to start any time now, Toshiba is lining up volume production by the first quarter of 2010.

Targeting portable devices such as iPhones and other smartphones, the new module is likely to be picked up by the makers. It is a fact that iPhone utilizes a single module, the new module could aid a capacity leap to 64GB. In the meantime, the iPod touch could even go up to 128GB by deploying two modules.
