Top Reasons NOT To Buy The iPad

Yesterday, I was on my computer waiting for Steve Jobs to change the world, so I hoped. In a different way though, he did. He showed me that even the best player can fall short sometimes. I wasn’t sure what I was hoping for before the announcement of the “iPad”, but I was sure hoping for a lot more than this. I will list out some reasons I won’t be buying this giant iPhone.

1. it is closed, locked, limited. See a movie? Either you buy it on iTunes at 10 $, or you spend 30 minutes to convert each of your DivX into a readable format.
2. Super sized Bezel Have you seen the bezel on this guy? Oh wow….it takes about 1/4 of the screen area. I know that Apple has to make sure it doesn’t get confuse when you are holding it and your thumb is on the screen, but seriously guys….it doesn’t have to be this BIG!
3. Multitasking = NOPE! – This alone is a deal-breaker. I understand if it’s a phone…like and iPhone can’t do multitasking, but it’s a freaking tablet. You put iWork on this guy assuming we can work on this like a real netbook, but I can’t even listen to Last.fm while I am typing my doc? What’s up with that?
4. No Flash Support – Wait….is this important? Do people really care about this? YES! YES! YES! We, probably excluding Apple people, care about watching streaming videos, like Hulu??? I want to be able to lay on the sofa and pull out my new Tampod to watch “The Office” on Hulu. Oh wait…I can’t!
5. No HDMI Output – If you want to watch a HD movie you just bought on iTune on the big screen TV using the HDMI output, you are out of luck.
6. No Camera – Can someone explain to me how much more would it cost to add a single camera on this thing? I want to use Skype. I want to be able to make a video call. It just seems logical for me to have one. Am I asking for too much here?
7. Adapters – You need an adapter for everything, even if you want to use USB.
8. No T-Mobile 3G – They said it’s unlocked, and it is. One catch, the 3G on T-Mobile won’t be able to support on iPad, and it uses MicroSim card, which nobody else is using.
9. Closed app environment – Want to use Firefox on the Tampod? Nope, you can’t. You are stuck with the same App Store which rejected Google Voice app for no real reason.
10. It’s not up to par with modern TV. The screen is 4:3 ratio, not 16:9, so you’ll need to watch movies in disappointing “letterbox” mode. And you can’t connect the iPad to your HDTV.
Well, I will let this Youtube video to sum up what I have been talking about and you can laugh about it
Right about now, HP Slate is looking pretty good. The ball is in their court, if they can delivery, I can only see positive things for them.

Ah yes I had forgotten the funny youtube video!
I completely agree. This thing had so much potential and utterly failed to deliever. I’m far from an Apple fanboy and I wasn’t going to get the iPad anyway, but if it was genuienly good I could have something to get worked up about when arguing about how impratical most Apple products are (maybe with the exception of the iPhone). So after months of spectuation not only did they use a name that MadTV had used to make fun of Apple products back in 2006, but they also failed to make it appeal in virtually anyway. A tablet OSX with a special interface would have made infinitely more sense. You make the OS and the hardware Apple, how could you miss the opportunity of taking a relatively good OS and putting a nice interface over and put it on the tablet, but know you take a phone’s OS, customize a few apps and call it a day.
This was withheld on purpose so they could get free advertising from rumors and speculation, because it would not have taken Apple this long to release it if this was all they were going to release. At least with HP slate, even though the interface was not custom made for a finger based touch screen, it gives me the full capabilities of a computer in an entertainment package, ie infinitely better than the iPad.
I have wanted a slate device that could act as a full computer, would let me view my pdf and documents, make notes and annotation, watch movies and surf the web, and possibly update the training on my Eve account if I was away from my main desktop, all in a device that looked and felt like a regular notebook that I could easily carry around. A tablet would NEVER replace my main computer and tablets never will, but sense such devices tend to be primarily output only I would only use when I’m away from the desktop but need access to the computer for whatever reason. This device does not do that, it barely does half of what I want. Apple I hated you before but now I have an adequate reason.
Umm…
