I know many of you were waiting for. And Finally, A jailbreak for iPhone 3GS has been released, But this time its Geo-Hot aka George Hotz instead of the the Dev-Team.

geohot-3gs-jailbreak

Here is a Small comment From Geo Hot:

Normally I don’t make tools for the general public, and rather wait for the dev team to do it. But guys, whats up with waiting until 3.1? That isn’t how the game is played. We release, Apple fixes, we find new holes. It isn’t worth waiting because you might have the “last” hole in the iPhone. What last hole…this isn’t golf. I’ll find a new one next week.

Requirements: You must have

1) Windows xp sp2 32bit
2) iTunes 8.2.0.23
3) Purplera1n software

Notice:

The jailbreak is a bit incomplete. The kernel vm_mem patch is not present so Winterboard will not work as some other critical tweaks. (SBSettings does work!).

Use with caution and be patient. If you’re not in a hurry, wait for the release from DevTeam.

First of all just go to purplera1n.com and Download purplera1n.exe. This thing works on all Windows, EXCLUDING windows 7. Make sure, You have the Latest  iTunes installed, and an iPhone with 3.0 firmware. Next, Connect Your iPhone normally and then click on “make it ra1n” and wait for sometime. On Bootup, run Freeze, the purplera1n installer app. After doing this, the steps are quiet obvious and you’ll figure out what do to next.

Its finally here! the long-awaited unlock solution for the iPhone 3G has now been officially released by the iPhone dev team!

Users who have upgraded their iPhone 3G with iPhone 3.0 OS can now be unlocked with the latest Ultrasn0w tool. The Ultrasn0w is used together with redsn0w or PwnageTool, which will jailbreak your iPhone 3G first before you proceed with the unlocking.

The redsn0w tool is released last week, which can be applied to iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPod Touch with iPhone 3.0 OS for jailbreaking. The original iPhone 2G can also be unlocked using the redsn0w tool alone without the latest Ultrasn0w.

For those who want to catch up fast, follow the below procedure to unlock the iPhone 3G on Firmware 3.0.

1. Ensure you have upgraded to iPhone OS 3.0.
2. Jailbreak the device using PwnageTool or Redsn0w.
3. Run Cydia to install Ultrasnow.
4. Please add the repo repo666.ultrasn0w.com
5. Search for Ultrasnow and install it.
6. Reboot your iPhone 3G.

Please note that this method is only suitable to work with iPhone 3G which was previously unlocked with YellowSnow. And the method is not recommended to unlock an iPhone 3GS.

Just after the iPhone 3G S is launched with iPhone 3.0 firmware which is the latest OS for the iPhone, the dev team has released the first tool to unlock the 3.0 firmware with the help of Pwnagetool which is currently available for Mac OS X. Windows users should have to wait for the same tool to be launched for their OS.

As always, the Dev Team comes with some rules for the users to try out the unlocking tools and here are those GOLDEN RULE:

If you are using a 3G iPhone with yellowsn0w and rely on yellowsn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should NOT use PwnageTool right now. UltraSn0w is not included with this release and therefore your baseband will be locked and unable to use an operator other than the official one it was bought for. UltraSn0w will be release via APT (cydia and icy) soon. If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.0 unlock works with this PwnageTool release.

PwnageTool WILL work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), Original iPod touch (1st Generation) and the iPhone 3G. It will not to work with the iPhone 3G S which is just launched.

Here are a few mirror links to download the Pwnagetool for 3.0 firmware of iPhone:

One of the most popular iPhone 1st Gen unlocking tool ‘Ziphone‘ is now going to be managed by a person called David.

Zibri, the man behind ZiPhone iPhone unlocking software had put up his website ziphone.org on an auction for a month or so. Due to some reason, he has called off his auction and returned $50 bidding donations. Someone named David is going to manage this website from now on.

The Dev-Team has finally released the unlock for the iPhone 3G and it’s compatible with firmware 2.2. The version of this unlock is listed as 0.9, so it’s still a beta version, but word is that it’s working like a charm for a whole lot of people. Preparation for the release have been in the working for weeks. Yellowsn0w is the Dev Team’s codename for the project. There are some requirements for you to follow before just using the unlock software.

First off, the unlock will only work with the baseband 02.28.00, which means you need the iPhone OS 2.2 to make it work. The unlock application is a daemon, which will launch on booting the iPhone. Now the third-party SIM-card will work.  If you ever need to uninstall it, this can be done by using Cydia and iTunes.

Known issues, which the Dev Team has already posted are:

  • There is a known issue with SIM cards that have STK (SIM Toolkit) application menus.  These menus are usually items such as “top up” “get credit” “lotto numbers” etc. These menu items confuse the application sometimes.  Removing and reinserting the SIM once after reboot (give it about 10 secs after you see the slide to unlock widget) fixes this issue.  We’re working on a better fix.
  • For those of you using SIM cards without STK menus, the application has some optional arguments that will make the unlock much faster for you.  So either experiment on your own (use “yellowsn0w -h” for usage) or wait for a customization writeup.
  • After you install yellowsn0w via Cydia, you should return to the Cydia main menu then reboot your iPhone with the 3rd party SIM installed.  Wait for the slide to unlock screen, then wait 10 or 15 secs more.   If you don’t see your carrier name pop up, then remove your SIM, reinsert it, and wait 10 secs more.  This is the step we’ll be working on eliminating next.

Tuan Anh Do, a 29 years old business man from Hanoi, now offers hardware unlocking services for the iPhone 3G. He is owner of a couple of cell phone repair stores and he now managed to find a rather painless way to unlock the iPhone 3G and offer that as a service to customers. Unlocking costs about 80US$.

Tuan Anh Do is well known to the iPhone scene as TAmobile. He was also the first to extract the bootloader from the first generation iPhones.

Unfortunately unlocking requires desoldering, binary modifying and resoldering of the baseband chip and is therefore by far not fool proof. Painless unlocking here means “painless” for experiences solder technicians. For the rest of us we either plan a Vietnam holiday or wait for a store to offer that service around the corner.

The iPhone Dev Team, the fine people behind the jailbreaking app for your iPhone, have just sent out a warning to everyone out there having the idea to install the upcoming 2.2 Firmware update.

Now for something a bit more serious,  we’ve explained about Apple’s updates in the past and we’ve warned against the immediate installation of these updates without knowing what they do to your device.

This is indeed true of the iPhone 3G’s upcoming 2.2 release. Installing ‘2.2’ on the iPhone 3G could affect your chances of any software unlock in the near future (should one be found and released), so when you see an update in iTunes await our instructions first!

Please don’t blindly install the update and then complain about it later ;-)

Thus, be sure you wait for the green light until installing it or you risk having some issues with your beloved jailbreak!

This really was beyond all possibility, thinking and reasoning of all, it seems that Apple with the output of the new MacBook and MacBook Pro takes a few to spoil the freedom that comes from having applications like pwnage tool and block. The problem is that the Mac does not recognize the iPhone when it restarts on how DOMs, the amendment needed to install the operating system’s iPhone.

Unable to recognize pwnage tool can not send the amendment, so the only thing you have left is to restart the iPhone and restore a backup.

I suppose that the Dev Team is aware of this problem, with almost surely we can trust them or any other developer (holy hackers!) To achieve a solution. Would you blame Apple? Is this problem with the release of the iPhone will be caused on purpose? I mean, Apple is aware that you can use a Windows PC to unblock nearly identical form.

The iPhoneDevTeam, the only team working on iPhone 3G’s unlocking method via breaking into some loophole in iPhone OS has got one step closer actually doing it. This team had already jailbroked iPhone 3G, which means that you can start adding unlocked apps and games using Cydia. But the SIM is still not opened. You will still have to be on legal ISP which has partnered with Apple to provide cellular services with iPhone. But if you jailbreak, your warranty is broken and Apple will not support your iPhone. This is the only reason, I haven’t yet jailbroken my iPhone 3G.

Anyways, let me now get to iPhoneDevTeam’s latest accomplishments:

Last week they posted this image on their blog:

This looks like greek to me but this is what the blog has to say:

We made some significant 3G progress this week.

Here’s a screenshot of a 3G iPhone whose baseband has been modified.  And even though it’s modified — and fails the integrity check — it’s still running.  Can you guess where the patch was made?

And this week, further progress has been made. I think the ultimate unlocking method is very close now.
