Guide to jailbreak iPhone 3.1.3 with PwnageTool 3.1.5

• Open PwnageTool 3.1.5 on your desktop and choose your device.
• PwnageTool will detect and verify the latest firmware.
• After verifying, it will ask whether you have contract. Click on No. (Yes for official subscribers) Clicking on “Yes” will update your baseband to the latest version which will make your device almost impossible to unlock. Click on “Yes” only if you are on an officially supported carrier like AT&T.
• It will build a new Custom .ipsw file for your device so that you could easily jailbreak it.
• Now, jailbreak your device with the help of custom firmware file. (Use Restore!)
• That’s it. Wait till entire process gets finished.

Sn0wbreeze is similar to the iPhone Dev Team’s Pwnage Tool, in that it creates a custom firmware that you use to restore with, in iTunes. This is for Windows users, only. I will say that I tested the beta of their 3.1.2 release, and it failed miserably. I ended up having to do an official restore, after trying it. I was trying it on my iPhone 3GS that I purchased on launch day, and jailbroke shortly after, so I know it has the older boot rom. Use this tool at your own risk.

The steps are pretty easy. To prepare yourself, make sure you have a copy of your device’s 3.1.3 firmware handy. Typically, keeping it on your desktop is easiest. Then download sn0wbreeze 3.1.3. You can get it here.

Click the blue arrow to get started. Then select “Simple Mode”, and click the blue arrow again.

Click browse and navigate to the correct IPSW for your device.

In my case, I’m using an iPhone 3GS firmware, and I get this warning. Make sure you are certain your 3GS has the old boot rom. If your 3GS is already jailbroken on 3.1.2, you know you are safe. If you have updated to the official 3.1.3, you’re out of luck. If you are sure, click “I Understand”.

Click the blue arrow, once sn0wbreeze has verified your IPSW.

Decide if you need hacktivation, or not. If you are on an official carrier, you click “No”. If you need to unlock, you click “yes”.

Sn0wbreeze will now build your custom IPSW.

Once it is finished you will see this screen, letting you know everything went well and you are now ready to restore in iTunes. If you are jailbreaking an iPhone 3GS, you will be asked to put your device in recovery mode. If you jailbroking an iPhone 3G or 2G, you will be asked to put your device in DFU mode.

To restore, just press Shift and click the Restore button, in iTunes, on your device’s summary screen. Then navigate to your new custom firmware. It should be on your desktop.

WARNING: Don’t do it if you need to keep an unlock (Using your phone on any network)

Jailbreakers BEWARE:

The iPhone Dev Team have warned via their Twitter account that updating to 3.1.3 will not only lose your jailbreak, but it may also prevent you from using the Ultrasn0w and Blacksn0w unlocks for the 3.1.2 baseband on the iPhone 3G and 3GS. It may also brick iPhone 3GS and third-generation iPod touch models that require Apple’s signature checking (SHSH) for restoring in iTunes.

To make free voice or video calls using Fring, you simply need to fire up your Fring iPhone app and hope that the message “voip calls are not allowed” does not appear anymore. If it does, just click “more”, then “go offline” and then open Fring again.

2. Super sized Bezel Have you seen the bezel on this guy? Oh wow….it takes about 1/4 of the screen area. I know that Apple has to make sure it doesn’t get confuse when you are holding it and your thumb is on the screen, but seriously guys….it doesn’t have to be this BIG!

5. No HDMI Output – If you want to watch a HD movie you just bought on iTune on the big screen TV using the HDMI output, you are out of luck.

6. No Camera – Can someone explain to me how much more would it cost to add a single camera on this thing? I want to use Skype. I want to be able to make a video call. It just seems logical for me to have one. Am I asking for too much here?

7. Adapters – You need an adapter for everything, even if you want to use USB.

8. No T-Mobile 3G – They said it’s unlocked, and it is. One catch, the 3G on T-Mobile won’t be able to support on iPad, and it uses MicroSim card, which nobody else is using.

9. Closed app environment – Want to use Firefox on the Tampod? Nope, you can’t. You are stuck with the same App Store which rejected Google Voice app for no real reason.

10. It’s not up to par with modern TV. The screen is 4:3 ratio, not 16:9, so you’ll need to watch movies in disappointing “letterbox” mode. And you can’t connect the iPad to your HDTV.
