Clippy can be called the first and real copy-paste app that works with most of the iPhone’s native apps. But this works on jailbroken iPhones only.
Clippy is a new native app (not a web app) that allows you to copy paste between the stock iPhone applications like Mail, Safari, Notes, etc. While it doesn’t work with many AppStore apps and you can only copy paste when you are editing txt it is a good step in the right direction.

To use you first need to be in the txt editor mode on the iPhone. In this case we’re replying to an email. First drag the cursor over the text you want to copy, press the “.?123″ button and select copy. Next move to whatever other app you’d like where you can edit text, press the “.?123″ button again, and select paste.

How to Install Clippy:

Clippy is available via Cydia. Just refresh and search for “clippy.”

It looks like there are about 10 000 apps in the App Store now. But there are still a few very good reasons to jailbreak your iPhone. There are at least 7 applications that will never make it into the official App Store and available only through the jailbreaking process.

In the “old times” users of the firmware 1.x could only use either applications bundled by Apple (not too many, mostly Safari, Mail, Calendar, Calculator) or use “web apps” through the mobile Safari browser. Of course clever developers (hackers) found a way to install 3rd party apps on iPhones. It required the user to “jailbreak” the phone, often also combined with “unlocking” (making cellular network-independent). It is being estimated that about 10% of 1st generation iPhones were unlocked in the pre-3G era.

This all changed when Apple introduced App Store in July 2008. Since then users of 2.x firmware can get 3rd party applications without the need to modify the phone.

For many people hacking the phone does not make sense any more. Also many developers, previously making apps for jailbroken phones, now create software for the App Store. App Store, as the only official source of native (vs. web-based) 3rd party software, has many benefits for both developers and end users.

But it also places limitations, e.g. applications cannot mess with other applications’ data, cannot run in background or cannot access some low-level APIs. Apple has strict approval policy and often denies applications from appearing in the Store.

For me, most of the applications I need are already in the Store. But there are just a few that are not and they alone make me jailbreak the iPhone. Just to be clear: the apps I list here are the ONLY jailbroken apps I am using. I try not to install any software that mess too much with the system. Reliability is for me much more important than customization so I do not care about changing themes, “better” management etc.

So… here is the list of apps that make jailbreaking the iPhone still worth it:

Terminal

The best thing about jailbreaking is that it unleashes the full Unix environment in the phone. I greatly appreciate the Terminal’s interface (you get CTRL or ALT modifiers by making finger gestures). Also you can do ssh, ftp, telnet or whatever from the Terminal. Cydia also provides a lot of Unix software, such as top, cvs, sudo, perl, python and many more that can help you convert your iPhone into a fully featured Unix box.

As a part of the installation you can also get a ssh server for your iPhone which allows you to log-in into your iPhone from another computer. Comes handy since you do not need to use the virtual keyboard to put commands any more, just ssh into the phone and it works.

Let us say it clearly again: jailbreaking turns your iPhone into a computer. It is handy.

Obviously Apple would never allow this kind of application into the Store since it breaks almost all of the app guidelines. So jailbreaking is the only way to install it.

Scrobble

Scrobbling (i.e. sending your played songs to last.fm) is painful on the iPhone. Sure you can use the official Last.fm app (it is great) but if you want to scrobble the tunes you play using the iPod functionality, you can get really mixed results. Sometimes the desktop Last.fm application detects the played songs and offers you to scrobble them, but it does not always work.

What this little app does is that it scrobbles your songs live as you listen to them. No extra workflow, it just works.

Again, Apple would not allow this kind of app in the App Store because apps are not allowed to run in background and probably cannot mess with the iPod functions.

StumblerPlus

A fully featured WiFi scanner. I am not sure how this one compares to those available in the App Store, but obviously it has one big advantage: it is free.

PdaNet

A great, almost zero-configuration tethering solution for the iPhone. In a few easy steps you can now use your iPhone as a 3G modem (internet gateway) for your computer. Handy when you need to connect your laptop to the Internet, but no WiFi is available around.

In fact Apple does now (yet) allow such applications because AT&T does now allow tethering in the contracts with its customers. I have double-checked my own contract (with ERA in Poland) and it does not forbid me to use the phone as a modem, so I am a happy user of PdaNet now.

Cycorder

iPhone lacks video recording. This small application fixes this. As easy to use as the original photo app.

Flashlight

This is pretty useful. The only thing this little app does is displaying a white rectangle (full-screen) and turning brightness to max setting. The difference between this and many other flashlight apps in the App Store is that regular applications are not allowed to modify brightness. This one uses as much power as the phone can provide and is really bright.

Cydia

Cydia, based on Debian’s APT, provides excellent management of added software with a very clean and sleek interface. Cydia is available by default when you jailbreak your phone and is de fact THE way to install software on the iPhone.

A very cool thing about Cydia is that you can still access the well-know commands apt-get, apt-cache and other. Either through the Terminal or the ssh access.

As far as I can tell there are currently about 1500 packages available through Cydia by default, this includes software from my list too.

And… that is all. If those applications could be found in the App Store, I would never consider jailbreaking. But they probably never will because each one of them break application guidelines.

Jailbreaking voids the warranty and can impact the reliability of the device (although I have not noticed any side-effects). The process is a piece of cake with Pwnage or QuickPwn tools, but the results may vary and I went through at least a few restore processes.

I hope this helps. If you have any suggestions or other reasons why jailbreaking is worth it, please post your comment!

It looks like AT&T are going to charge iPhone users to tether their iPhone to their PC or Mac, and it will cost around $30 per month and there will be a cap on the data of 5GB per month.

The reason we haven’t heard or seen anything about it, is because AT&T is being extremely paranoid of how the service will run on their network. “Since I’ve worked here, I’ve never seen them be so worried about legalities,” my colleague explained. Regarding the service being available to Blackberry users, he says that it’s a different situation. Blackberry users haven’t slammed AT&T’s network by the millions in one quarter, in such large rushes. “Regardless of how many billions of dollars AT&T pours into their 3G network, it hasn’t been stable enough to handle all you iPhone users,” he explained.

Here’s some details of the potential tethering plan.

  • 5GB Data Cap (just like Blackberry users) – AT&T will automatically turn off your tethering connection if you use too much bandwidth. Of note, the 5GB cap might get sliced for all users, not just iPhone users, in order to accommodate all new tethering plan customers (bandwidth demand).
  • Initial connection through iTunes? (not sure if this is every time you connect, or just for initial setup)
  • Expected speeds: GPRS: 30k – dialup speeds / EDGE: 110k – ISDN speeds / 3G: 1000k – slow broadband.
  • You’ll want to disable auto-updates for everything, so as to not go over usage limitations.
  • Will be +$30/month, new iPhone plans may be rolled out with tethering rolled in.
  • Do not pro-rate tethering/bandwidth, it can become a nightmare, instead wait until new billing cycle.
  • For unlimited bandwidth, AT&T will tell you to get a wireless PC card.
  • No idea on a launch date.

So basically: AT&T wants to charge you $30 per month for a plan that can only be used for occasional tethering. It’s what we expected, sure, but it’s not what we’d hoped.

As you might expect, it will be capped at 5gigs a month, which seems pretty anemic for $30 bucks to us. On the bright side, PdaNet is available for FREE on Cydia and does for free just what AT&T wants to charge you +$30/month.

A theme kit has been released for those wanting to modify the look of the SBSettings iPhone App.

SBSettings is a replacement for BossPrefs. It moves your important toggles directly into Springboard where they are always available instantly even while other apps are running.

BigBoss has provided a guide which will explain what each element is that can be themed, where the theme folders are expected to go, and provides some screenshots. It also has a link to the default theme with all the files expected in their proper locations so that you can make your theme mimick this layout.

If you think you have created a really good theme you can submit it for inclusion on the BigBoss Repository

Here was the screenshot that made its way into our email today of a future feature coming to Cydia.

Before                        and                          After

As you can notice an all new rating system for apps should be implemented which will be very nice. There aren’t any screenshots of what the page looks like once you click the rating but if we come across it, we’ll post an update. You can see from the comparative screenshots taken below that it will also come with a cool redesign that adds an apps icon image as well as a small icons to each of the selections like the e-mail icon for contacting the application’s creator.

iFoneTec Ltd released version 2.0 Cylay, a tool that helps you secure your phone and its data. Touted by the company’s web page as the “the first security application for the iPhone”, the company says the application will:

  • Report current user phone number when iPhone is lost;
  • Backup iPhone data to Cylay Server or Google Server;
  • Delete all of iPhone information when iPhone is lost;
  • Find lost iPhone location;
  • Report Call history and SMS log of lost iPhone;
  • Remotely control lost iPhone: forward SMS, and restore data to iPhone

If you go to this web site, you can create an account and set up your iPhone profile. It looks like there is a trial membership for free and you pay 19.99 a year to get advanced features. It is a bit unclear what these advanced features are but the web site says the membership fee includes:
No setup Server and Client fee.
Free to update Cylay during in 1 year.
unlimited access Cylay server , backup, restore iPhone information to Cylay server and iPhone
unlimited the notices of warning unlimited to access Calllog,SMSlog, Contacts,Notes.

Related posts

Again unclear from the website, it looks like from the website you can register your phone number and iPhone serial number and report your phone through their web page when it gets lost. You can also identify the location of the iPhone.  It looks like you can also back it up remotely and send an SMS message to it to erase your iPhone to prevent your data from falling into the wrong hands.

SBSettings is a great new app that allows you to quickly toggle Wifi, Data, SSH, hide apps and fix permissions and other services that are normally controlled by Settings and BossTools.

Simply access the new SBSettings by installing it on your jailbroken iPhone 3G or iPhone/Ipod Touch via Cydia. Once that’s out of the way, to launch the app swipe your finger across or down, even double tap the status bar when your phone is locked or you are on the springboard and the new drop down menu will appear.

Reminds me of the G1 task manager. Easy device management. This app is free and very useful. Enjoy.

From Bigboss himself:

I updated SBSettings Toggles again to v1.2.1 after working with a small group of folks that were having “enable SSH” issues. So you guys should update this again if you are still having SSH issues.

Another SBSettings update. v0.92 fixes many bugs that you all have reported. Make sure you also accept the sbsettings toggles update, too or you won’t benefit from the new SSH toggle code!

Here is the changelog:

- Disabled the app while in call. It was too easy to brush against your face and inadvertantly call up the GUI. Then again bump a toggle with your face such as EDGE or 3G and kill your call.
- Fixed security hole by disabling SBSettings when device is locked with a passcode on the lockscreen. SBSettings will still load when on lock screen but no passcode is entered.
- Added reboot / power to the power button by massive request. (I still see no use for reboot but you guys win).
- Added “Lock” to the power menu! (OK this is exciting for me because I tried to do this in BossPrefs and never found a way).
- Reworked SSH toggle. It’s an app so if another app is running it wouldn’t work but the toggle would turn colors. This has been modified to kill the top running app if it is running so it works now. You guys have no idea how problematic SSH toggle is in this. It requires root permissions but springboard runs as mobile.
- The “more” button launches an app. If another app is running, this wouldnt be able to launch. Now if another app is running, it shows a red “no use” circle indicating that you cannot launch the more app.
In the near future I will look into:

1) VPN Toggle (although not sure how to test this since I have no VPN).
2) Plugin interface
3) Theme interface.

If, for whatever reason, your iPhone or iPhone 3G’s iPod music player just isn’t cutting it for you, PwnPlayer could be just the thing to cure your music-blues.

PwnPlayer reads any folder inside your iPhone/iPod file system and will play mp3s the same way MobileMusicPlayer does, with playlist, artwork and add/remove/tag edit support.

MewSeek is a native P2P Soulseek client that lets you search and download music (or any kind of file) for free, straight from your iPhone or iPod Touch, using either your EDGE, Wi-Fi or 3G connection.
