Internet tethering is a feature that allows you to connect to WiFi or 3G on your laptop through your iPhone by turning your iPhone into a “modem”. There are several methods floating around to enable tethering on iPhone OS 3.0.

How to enable Tethering on iPhone OS 3.0

Tethering through iPhone’s safari is the easiest way to enable the hack.

Go to the link — http://help.benm.at/help.php — using iPhone’s Safari browser.

Then click on Mobileconfigs on that page

Select your country from the list

Once you have selected the country, you will be asked to select the provider.

Tap on the Install button

Tap on the Install Now button

Tap on the Done button

Go to Settings -> General -> Network -> Internet Tethering and tap on the toggle button to enable tethering.

Issues: This seems to disable Voicemail feature for some users and It doesn’t seem to work with 1st generation iPhone.

Note: If using tethering then you should not upgrade to OS 3.1 as this upgrade will disable the hack.

PdaNet for iPhone has been released through Cydia. It is similar to NetShare or 3proxy, but PdaNet is definitely a better choice. You don’t need to set any SOCKS proxy in computer. You don’t need to modify your system’s preference. The best part is that every program will work probably with the shared connection by PdaNet. It is extremely easy to use.

You only need to create a simple Ad Hoc network between your computer and iPhone. There is no need to modify any further system setting.

Detail steps are:

You need to jailbreak your iPhone 2G/3G first, then install PdaNet from Cydia. Restart iPhone once.

In computer (Windows),

Step 1. Double click the network connection in the task bar.

Step 2. In the Network and sharing center, set up a new connection. Choose wireless adhoc connection as prompted. Follow the steps required.

Step 3. Enter any name you loved to. The computer will now wait for the connection.

In iPhone,

Step 4. In Settings, connect to the network you created in step 3 above.

Step 5. Run PdaNet. Switch it to on (the switch is at the bottom). It will be automatically connected and show the screen above.

Step 6. if it shows it is initialized for the first time. Press the Home key to go back to springboard first. Then, make sure you connected to the network in step 3, run PdaNet and turn on the switch again.

PdaNet works perfectly for Windows and Mac. Everything will work properly. There is no need to setup SOCKS proxy for every single program. MSN, VLC streaming, QuickTime, web browsing with upload and download are all okay.

You can run other program on iPhone. But, you need to keep the screen on because it needs to keep Wi-Fi staying alive.

UPDATE:

Caution When Upgrading PdaNet to 1.40

The latest update puts the application in ‘trial mode’ and after so many days. This means you can now only browse HTTP connections and not HTTPS anymore.

Full version is $29

One big inconvenience the iPhone 3G shares with its predecessor, is Apple’s (or AT&T’s?) apparant decline to allow its use as a 3G-modem for your laptop. of course there was NetShare, a proxy-application shortly available through AppStore, until Apple pulled the plug (I had no chance to install it, of course). meanwhile there are at least two app’s available through Cydia for jailbroken devices, both of which I’ve tried out recently:

Socks is a commandline-SOCKS-proxy, which connects to an ad-hoc wifi-network manually setup on your Macbook/Pro/Air (no idea how to set this up on Windows). ModMyiFone has a thorough howto – it’s a bit complicated and involves Mobile Terminal, but works fine for browsing (don’t forget to adjust your browser’s proxy-settings, and turn of auto-lock on your iPhone, otherwise the connection drops as soon as the phone stands-by!)

iPhoneModem basically works the same way, bot comes with a Mac OS/Windows-widget which makes the whole setup a one-click-process. such comfort comes at a cost, however – iPhoneModem goes for 10$, the free-version pauses the connection every other minute by displaying a purchase-nag.
