PwnageTool 2.1 and QuickPwn fixes problems for the iPhone firmware 2.1

Hey folks! Just abit over two weeks after our last roundup for , we now have another updated roundup for the latest and just recently released iPhone firmware version 2.1. In this latest roundup, as before, we will try to summarise the most popular methods that the iPhone community and also the iPhone Dev Team have come up with for jailbreaking and unlocking the iPhone 2.1.

The iPhone software or firmware 2.1 which was announced by Steve Jobs earlier this week has indeed addressed a number of issues, these include

Decrease in call set-up failures and dropped calls
Significantly better battery life for most users
Dramatically reduced time to backup to iTunes
Improved email reliability, notably fetching email from POP and Exchange accounts
Faster installation of 3rd party applications
Fixed bugs causing hangs and crashes for users with lots of third party applications
Improved performance in text messaging
Faster loading and searching of contacts
Improved accuracy of the 3G signal strength display
Repeat alert up to two additional times for incoming text messages
Option to wipe data after ten failed passcode attempts
Genius playlist creation

However, as you would expect if you’ve previously experienced some jailbreaking or unlock yourself, updating to the latest iPhone firmware always means paying a bigger price, getting your iPhone locked or ‘bricked’ again…

As mentioned, there are two main methods we have noticed so far, one of which comes via the folks at Sleepers.net and the other via the world reknown iPhone Dev Team. What we have summarised for you below will give you a good idea of which one of the two you should choose in order to satisfy your jailbreaking or/and unlocking needs.

However, because we’re so kind , we’d rather be honest (and biased) and tell you that the first method (from Sleepers.net) have raised a number of unstable issues, so it is recommended only if you really know what you’re doing and don’t mind the risk of running into problems in the near future. Nevertheless, we thought it deserved a quick mention.

Sleepers.net method (non iPhone Dev Team)

This method has been designed to jailbreak first generation iPhone (2G) and iPhone 3G running iPhone firmware 2.1 for Windows users only and as mentioned above, this method is abit risky if you’re not an expert, there are still a number of issues that needs to be addressed. Here are the steps…

Download iPhone firmware 2.1 for iPhone 3G or download iPhone firmware 2.1 for 1st generation iPhone using this link.
Install iTunes 8 either by updating your existing iTunes or downloading it from Apple.
Update iPhone with iTunes and make sure it is activated!
Then uninstall iTunes 8.
Then uninstall Apple Mobile Device Support (From Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel)
Now install iTunes v7.7.*.
Download Quickpwn with the correct 2.1 bundle from this link.
Run Quickpwn, select your iPhone1,2_2.1_5F136_Restore.ipsw or iPhone1,1_2.1_5F136_Restore.ipsw.
You can select Cydia and Installer and logos if you wish.
When it is finished the iPhone will reboot. Cydia and Installer will NOT be visible.
Next, download TotalCommander.
And also download t-pot addon.
Install TotalCommander and in the left pane navigate to T-PoT.1.1.zip and click on it. It will install t-pot automatically.
Now download the mobile installation patch.
Next, use Totalcommander to install patched mobileinstallation to /System/Library/PrivateFrameWorks/MobileInstallation.framework … clickon the dropdown box [-\-] top left and select network neighbourhood then t-pot. Remeber to back up your original mobileinstallation first! Drag the file from the right pane to the left, not from windows explorer to TotalCOmmander.
Still in TotalCommander delete /private/var/mobile/Library/Caches/com.apple.mobile.installation.plist
Reboot the phone. This should jailbreak your iPhone.
Install “CacheDel” from cydia. Run this after each Cydia update or app install. Soon, Cydia, itself will be updated and this step will no longer be necessary.

If you’ve just read the steps above, you will see that it’s pretty complicated and time consuming, plus quite a risky process for beginners who actually don’t know what’s going on, therefore being as biased as we are, we recommend you choose the method below by the iPhone Dev Team…

PwnageTool 2.1 and QuickPwn 1.1

The latest version of the Pwnage Tool version 2.1 can jailbreak and unlock the first generation iPhone running either firmware 1.1.4 or 1.1.5 or 2.x.x which includes iPhone firmwares 2.0.1, 2.0.2 and the latest just released 2.1. It also can jailbreak but NOT unlock the latest iPhone 3G running iPhone firmware 2.x.x, which includes 2.0, 2.0.1, 2.0.2 and the latest 2.1.

The latest version of QuickPwn, version 1.1 has also now been updated to support firmware 2.1.

It’s important to note that, unlike, the previous version of QuickPwn, which was made into one version for Mac and one version for Windows users, this latest QuickPwn 1.1 does not yet support Windows users. Therefore, there is not yet a method from the iPhone Dev Team that will work for Windows users hoping to jailbreak or unlock their iPhones on firmware 2.1.
